Weiqi Liao

Weiqi is a Data Scientist working with Professor Julia Hippisley-Cox in the Nuffield Department of Primary Care Health Sciences, University of Oxford. He was trained in China and the UK, with a mixed educational background in Epidemiology, Biostatistics, Population Health, and Health Services Research.

In DELIVER Weiqi is using electronic health records (EHRs) from the QResearch database to understand the epidemiological aspects of people diagnosed with hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) in England, and to identify the early signs and clinical features (symptoms and comorbidities) for HCC. He also contributes to the development and validation of personalised prediction models to estimate individual patient’s risk of getting an HCC diagnosis using EHRs. This could help to identify patients at high risk, who will benefit from active surveillance, early diagnosis and medical intervention.

Besides the DeLIVER project, Weiqi also conducts other cancer projects in the Primary Care Epidemiology team at Oxford, including lung cancer (the DART project, funded by Innovate UK) and pancreatic cancer (the ADEPTS project, funded by Pancreatic Cancer UK). He is interested in using real-world data in research for early cancer diagnosis and improving patient outcomes.
